Ageism
As we are all aging, an ongoing priority is addressing ageism in our communities. The impacts of ageism on our health, medical care, and more are well documented in the literature. This commitment also is grounded in the local knowledge that in Central Ohio, well over half of those 50+ feel there are negative stereotypes about aging in our community (CORAA, 2021). Efforts include engagement and promotion of the National Reframe Aging Initiative with students and community partners, continuing efforts on the #ButtonUpAgeism campaign and investing in intergenerational, positive aging photo and video shoots with students and community members.

We are experiencing population aging like never before. While the media often portrays this as a problem, Katie will encourage you to view it as an opportunity to rethink how we age and what it means to grow older. From her first job as a teenager in a nursing home, to her current role as Director of Age-Friendly Communities at The Ohio State University College of Social Work, she recounts stories of challenges, compassion, and resiliency of older adults and individuals with disabilities.
WOSU All Sides with Ann Fisher
The senior population in Central Ohio will likely double by 2055. But how society embraces the change of demographics too often is influenced by the stereotypes at play in popular media. Coming up, ageism and popular media and a short-form comedy series with local ties addresses the dichotomy.
