Transportation and Mobility
AFIC continues to be a leader in lifting the voices of older adults in transportation work.
Highlights include the Center’s work on the Age-Friendly Transit: Accessible and Inclusive Transit Stop Infrastructure report. This report, led to infrastructure updates to eight local Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) bus stops. Another highlight is the Safe Routes to Age in Place Through Villages, a research projects, which will guide implementation of community level initiatives in the coming year.

We are all temporarily mobile. Mobility is the antidote to social isolation. Social isolation is one of the strongest predictors of the length and quality of life that we can control. Gerontological social worker Dr. Holly Dabelko-Schoeny challenges us to create new mobility solutions through interdisciplinary innovations that pair behavioral experts such as social workers with engineers and planners with experience experts, older adults and people with disabilities.
Lyft has become an essential transportation solution for older citizens in Columbus, Ohio, providing convenient and reliable mobility options. With the aging population in mind, Lyft's user-friendly app and accessible vehicles have made it easier for seniors to maintain their independence, attend medical appointments, and stay connected with their community. The flexibility and convenience of Lyft's service have helped improve the quality of life for older residents, ensuring they have the freedom to travel safely and comfortably throughout Columbus.
Age-Friendly Alternative Transportation
The availability, acceptability, accessibility, adaptability and affordability of transportation options have significant implications for the physical and mental health of older adults. Age-Friendly Innovation Center staff discuss their research, education, and community engagement efforts to impact alternative transportation options for older adults in the region.

For many of us, getting from point A to point B is as simple as getting in the car and going. Yet there are large populations out there who don’t have the same luxury of mobility.
